Summary:

Research Engineer serves as principal investigator for multiple research projects investigating electronic assembly processes, assembly materials, interconnect reliability or novel assembly manufacturing equipment as they relate to existing or developmental electronic packaging technologies. Duties include planning and executing laboratory research activities; responsible for timely project execution, detailed written reports, technical presentations and customer communications. Position reports to manager of SMT process laboratory research consortium.

Principal Accountabilities:
• Develops research plans and associated experimental procedures in support of consortium research objectives.
• Executes planned consortium research in a safe and scientifically rigorous manner.
• Assists and directs university students in assigned research tasks and development projects.
• Uses computer software and electronic instrumentation to conduct tests and analyze data in accordance with accepted industry practices.
• Presents results and conclusions to professional audiences in a technical seminar format on a routine basis.
• Writes detailed technical reports and scientific papers detailing procedures, outcomes, observations and analyses of research results.
• Provides professional communication with customers, suppliers, and consortium company representatives in support of consortium research tasks and laboratory service jobs.
• Directs and coordinates activities concerned with design, material selection and procurement, assembly process definition, and manufacturing equipment specification.
Provides consultation in areas of electronics manufacturing, materials and process to external and internal customers.
• Minimum Requirements:
• B.S. degree combined with equivalent relevant research experience.
• 2-4 years of experience evaluating electronic materials, solder metallurgy, assembly manufacturing processes or reliability failure mechanisms.
• M.S. Degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Materials Engineering, or relevant field of Science or Engineering, or Ph.D. degree encouraged.
• Experience with thermal interface material ( TIM ) property investigation, is a plus.
• Basic knowledge of measurement principles, mechanical design, metallurgy, physics, etc.
• Familiarity with microscopes, measuring devices and other necessary tools.
• Willingness to travel to customer sites and technical conferences from time to time, is desirable.
Must be articulate in spoken and written communications, with strong interpersonal skills.
• Responsibility for Quality Procedures, Ethical Practices and Data Integrity:
• Adheres to Universal Instruments Quality System policies and procedures.
• Practices and promotes safe laboratory procedures and operations.
Follows ethical practices for data collection, analysis and reporting and assures scientific integrity of reported results.

• Requires the ability to use a computer on a frequent basis.

The Role:

The Electrical Engineer for Hardware Development is a key resource on business-critical projects, architecting and designing the electrical systems for the next generation of high-performance automation equipment. The position’s scope includes system-level architecture, high-level system design, and detailed electrical subsystem design spanning areas, including analog sensing, motion control, and mixed-signal design.
• What You’ll Do:
• Help deliver the next generation of pick and place automation equipment.
• Champion key development milestones and grow to the level of subject matter expert on the team.
• Review product test methods, fixtures, and results for test efficacy and product qualification.
Work with junior engineers to provide technical guidance.
• Ideal Candidate Will Demonstrate:
• Willingness to work at the system level to drive product architecture and machine-level design.
• Comfortable moving between system-level goals and subsystem requirements and detailed design.
• Aptitude to develop, debug, verify, and characterize the design of electronic, electrical, and electro-mechanical circuits and integrated systems.
• Strengths in hardware/firmware design using processors, FPGA, sensors, actuators, and mixed-signal analog and digital circuits via schematic entry, layout, simulation, and optimization.
Confidence in design, review, prototyping, bring-up, debugging, verification, validation testing, and manufacturing start-up support.
• Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with 4+ years of relevant experience; Master’s Degree preferred.
• Relevant experience in analog and mixed-signal circuit design with an in-depth understanding of core concepts such as noise, mismatch, etc.
• Design experience with high-precision voltage regulators, operational amplifiers (IC), comparators, buck-switching converters, LDOs
• Experience with Altium PCB Design Tools (experience with SOLIDWORKS Electrical suite a plus).
• Proficiency with laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, data acquisition, power supplies, soldering, etc.
Team lead experience is preferred.
• Physical Demands:
• The position requires the ability to understand and interpret detailed documents and drawings.
• The ability to communicate clearly with colleagues and in giving presentations.
The ability to travel to other company sites may occasionally be required <10%.

VMWare VCP Certification is huge plus. Preferred experience with IBM Servers. Practical day to day experience with Veeam Cloud backup (or similar) and replication, including managing LTO tape libraries, is highly preferred. Experience with Backup Exec would be a plus. Scripting experience including PowerShell, Python or related.
